Rules and Laws for the Visibility and Accessibility of Lifesaving Equipment

In Sweden, there are specific legal requirements and guidelines to ensure that life-saving equipment is visible in darkness and poor visibility conditions. According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s regulations on port work (AFS 2001:9), life-saving equipment should be easily accessible and clearly marked to facilitate rapid use in emergencies.

In addition, it is recommended that life-saving ladders and other rescue equipment be painted in bright colors, such as yellow, to ensure maximum visibility, even in darkness and bad weather. This can be complemented by clear signage indicating the location of the equipment. Read more about water safety recommendations here.

For ships, the Swedish Transport Agency’s regulations (TSFS 2017:26) specify that lifejackets that have their own buoyancy and are intended to be worn without a lifejacket should, when used in darkness or poor visibility, be equipped with a whistle and light to increase visibility.

These rules and recommendations aim to improve the safety of water-related activities by ensuring that life-saving equipment is visible and easily accessible in all conditions.
